Schedule: The Summer 2020 schedule is attached. The course will run online from July 20 to August 14, 2020. Scholarship: The cost for EALS for a student who later matriculates in a St. John s Law LL.M. or Legal English program is $1,875. We can extend the partner school scholarship rate of 50% to this already reduced tuition cost even if the partner school student(s) do not later enroll in a St. John s LL.M. or Legal English program. Therefore, the tuition cost to enroll in EALS for Summer 2020 will be: $938. Certificate of Completion: St. John s Law will provide a certificate of completion to students who successfully complete EALS. Please note that this is a non-credit course. While students will receive feedback from the professors throughout the course, they are not assigned an official grade. Application Process: The application will be available online shortly, in the interim please let us know if any students are interested. The application materials will include: (1) Personal Statement answering the following question: Why are you interested in enrolling in the St. John s Law English for American Law Schools course, and what are you hoping to learn from the program? The statement should be written in a clear, concise manner, reflecting the applicant's personal writing style, and be approximately 250 words. (2) English Language Evaluation, which can be provided through a St. John s Law English Language Evaluation, Duolingo (95+), IELTS (6+), or TOEFL IBT (70+). (3) Resume: An American-style legal resume that is 1-2 pages showing an overview of the applicant s education (university level and above) and work experience. For educational institutions, include the name, location, dates attended, and grades received including the appropriate scale (e.g., 3.5/4.0). For work experience, including internships or traineeships, include the company name, location, and dates worked, along with the applicant s title and a brief description of the tasks accomplished. No photo is needed, and all descriptions should be short. Professor s Biographies: Professor Kayalyn A. Marafioti: Professor Marafioti is an Adjunct Professor of Law at St. John s Law School. Professor Marafioti practiced law in New York City for more than three decades. For most of that time she was a partner in the corporate restructuring department of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, a global law firm, where she regularly worked on cross-border transactions with lawyers from all over the world. Professor Marafioti earned a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she served as Note and Comment editor of the NYU Journal of International Law and Politics, and an A.B. cum laude from Harvard University, where she studied history and literature. Following her retirement from Skadden, she earned a certificate in teaching English language from The New School in New York. She is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy Professor Daniel Edelson: Professor Edelson is an Adjunct Professor of Law at St. John s Law School. In addition to having his own law practice, Professor Edelson teaches St. John s LL.M. and Legal English students; and tutors LL.M. students, first year J.D. students, and New York bar exam candidates. Professor Edelson in an attorney admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. For several years he was associated with two international law firms in New York City where he specialized in business litigation and securities fraud. In 2012, Professor Edelson moved to Seoul, South Korea to teach U.S. law. He is also the creator of numerous short, animated video explanations of legal topics on his website USLawEssentials.com. Prior to becoming an attorney Professor Edelson lived in Japan where, among other things, he taught English as a Second Language.
